🇬🇷 Our trip to Greece 2025 - a review full of highlights and inspiration
29.06.2025
In May and June 2025, we once again accompanied a very special tour to Greece. With a small, curious group, we set off southwards from Switzerland - always with the aim of experiencing the country, its people and history together rather than simply ticking off the sights.
The route took us via Italy and the mainland to the Cyclades islands and back again. It was a journey full of encounters, impressions and culinary experiences - and we would like to share a few very special highlights with you here.
A relaxed start heading south
Even the journey to Italy was more than just a necessary journey for us. We took our time to let the mood in the group grow and to take cosy breaks along the way. A sensational lunch in a restaurant near Ancona heralded the start of the journey with a first culinary highlight - honestly one of those experiences that simply sticks with you.
Before boarding the ferry in the evening, we used the day to show Ancona from its most beautiful side. From the mighty cathedral to the old Lazzaretto in the harbour basin and the special caves on the west side of the city - places full of history and Italian charm that many travellers simply overlook.
Greek coastal towns and Byzantine heritage
After a calm crossing, we reached the Greek mainland. Parga awaited us with narrow streets in the old town, a lively harbour and an atmosphere that immediately put you at ease. Here it was time to arrive, enjoy and discover the first Greek tavernas together in the evening.
We continued south along the coast. A breakfast on the beach near Parga - coffee and fresh pastries in the morning light - was a simple but unforgettable moment. In Nafpaktos, a former Byzantine town with its well-preserved walls and Venetian harbour, we experienced history at first hand. These places are not obligatory stops for us, but living testimonies of times gone by that we are happy to share with our guests.
From Corinth to the Cyclades
Along the way, we enjoyed views of the Corinth Canal, explored the ruins of Ancient Corinth and marvelled at the ornate mosaics in Isthmia. For many, these are simply dots on a map - for us, they are stories from centuries ago that we brought back to life together.
The next big highlight was embarking on the Cyclades. Naxos welcomed us with open arms - an island that we know well and where we feel at home. For six days, we discovered hidden beaches, ancient temples, charming mountain villages and enjoyed evenings with friends in cosy tavernas.
A particular highlight: our day trip to Mykonos. Not only the famous ‘Little Venice’ with its balconies over the water or the white windmills were impressive - but also our stop at Platis Gialos beach, where we visited our friend Dimitri in his exclusive restaurant and soaked up the relaxed beach atmosphere with excellent food.
Cultural treasures and natural wonders on the way back
The journey back to the mainland once again offered us impressive insights into Greek history - with the ancient theatre of Epidaurus and the lively town of Nafplio as our overnight destination. The journey on the cog railway from Diakoptou to Kalavryta also remains an experience: a spectacular gorge, pure nature and the feeling of really being on the road.
On the last day before the journey home, there were lots of little highlights: the imposing Rio Fortress, a stop at a well-known little harbour café in Sevenita and dinner on a secluded beach outside Igoumenitsa. With the sound of the sea in our ears, we finally left Greece behind us and boarded the ferry back to Ancona.
Travelling together - and perhaps soon again
The return journey through Italy back to Switzerland was also part of it - with cosy breaks, many conversations and the feeling of having experienced something special together. We arrived back at our starting point late at night and said goodbye with many new memories in our luggage.
This tour showed us once again how diverse and rich in stories Greece is. And to be honest, we haven't shown you everything yet. Perhaps there will be another trip like this next year - there are still so many places we would like to discover together.
